Getting a GSTIN (GST Identification Number) is the first step in your GST journey. The registration process is fully online and typically takes 7 working days if all documents are in order. This guide walks you through every step.
Who Must Register for GST?
Businesses with turnover above ₹40 lakhs (goods) or ₹20 lakhs (services)
E-commerce sellers (Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, etc.) — mandatory regardless of turnover
Businesses that sell goods or services across state borders
Casual taxable persons and non-resident taxable persons
Businesses previously registered under VAT, Service Tax, or Central Excise
Documents Required for GST Registration
Keep these documents ready before starting the application:
PAN card of the business / proprietor / partners / directors
Aadhaar card of the authorised signatory (for Aadhaar-based verification)
Proof of business address (electricity bill, rent agreement, or property tax receipt)
Bank account details — cancelled cheque or bank statement with account number and IFSC
Partnership deed (for partnership firms), MOA/AOA (for companies), or Certificate of Incorporation
Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for company directors
Step-by-Step GST Registration Process
Go to gst.gov.in and click Services → Registration → New Registration
Select 'Taxpayer' as your type, choose your State and District, enter your legal name as per PAN, PAN number, email, and mobile. Click Proceed.
Verify your email and mobile OTP. You will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN) on your email.
Log back in using Services → Registration → New Registration → using TRN. Fill Part B of the application with all business details, address, HSN/SAC codes, bank details, and upload documents.
Submit the application using your Digital Signature (DSC), E-Sign (Aadhaar OTP), or EVC. You will get an Application Reference Number (ARN).
Track your ARN status at gst.gov.in. The GST officer reviews the application within 7 working days. If additional documents are needed, you will receive a notice in Form GST REG-03.
Once approved, your GST registration certificate (Form REG-06) and your 15-digit GSTIN are issued. Download from GST portal.
Understanding Your GSTIN
Your GSTIN is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code. Here is what it means:
First 2 digits: State code (e.g., 36 = Telangana, 27 = Maharashtra)
Next 10 digits: PAN of the business entity
13th digit: Entity number (how many GSTINs this PAN has in the same state)
14th digit: Always 'Z' (default)
15th digit: Checksum digit
What to Do After Getting Your GSTIN
Update all invoices, letterheads, and business documents with your GSTIN
Set up GST-compliant accounting software (Tally, Zoho Books, etc.)
File your first GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for the month in which you registered
Display your GSTIN prominently at your place of business (legally required)
